It seems sand dollars, along with molten lava, Mexican jumping beans, quick sand, and cheetahs, have become less prominent in my life as I’ve grown older. Today, if I were to chat with my younger self over peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I might tell him that both sand dollars and sea stars are members of phylum Echinodermata, and that unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts aren’t doing him any favors.
