An adolescent sand dollar, photographed by Bruno Vellutini. It seems sand dollars, along with molten lava, Mexican jumping beans, quick sand, and cheetahs, have become less prominent in my life as I’ve grown older. Today, if I were to chat with my younger self over peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I might tell him that both sand dollars and sea stars are members of phylum Echinodermata, and that unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts aren’t doing him any favors.
